Most people know that car insurance is much more expensive
for drivers under the age of 25. This is due to the fact that younger drivers
have a lot less experience, and are more of a risk on the roads. What many
people do not know is that motor insurance can be quite expensive for drivers
over the age of 65, in other words, pensioners. But why is this? Surely,
drivers who have been on the road for so many years will have a lot of
experience and will be a lower risk. But this is not necessarily true.
The fact is that many elderly drivers are the cause for a
lot of devastating accidents. There are many accidents attributed to elderly
people who actually should not be driving. If they were in fact to take their
driving test again, they would fail.
It is a sad fact, but as one gets older, things such as
eyesight and reflexes and concentration become more inhibited. If you have an
elderly person on the roads who does not have perfect vision anymore, their
driving judgment can be totally skewed and they will cause accidents.
Furthermore, some older people have lapses in concentration, and poor judgment
regarding distances, and memory lapses regarding road rules. These faults can
lead to devastating accidents. For all these reasons, motor insurance for
elderly people will be more expensive than for someone under the age of 65.
There are, however, many competent drivers over the age of
65. These people perhaps have perfect vision, or are wearing corrective
measures to improve their eyesight. Some of them may be of perfectly sound mind
and alert concentration, and even do not travel that much on a regular basis in
their motor vehicles. How does someone like this obtain a lower insurance
premium, as everyone knows that most people do not retire in a pleasant
financial situation, nor do pension payouts offer a flush of income every
month?
The first thing that an elderly person can do is to reapply
for motor
insurance. By doing research, it is sometimes possible to find specialised
insurance packages for over 65s. If this is impossible to find, it is back to
the drawing board and time to try and find a good, new insurance company. A
number of quotes need to be obtained, so that comparisons can be made. If the
driver has not had too many negative driving incidents in their past, they will
automatically qualify for a lower premium. The same goes if their vehicle is of
a decent value and has a good security system. The driver will then need to
take all the necessary tests to ensure they are perfectly able to be operating
a motor vehicle on the roads.
It can be quite distressing for elderly drivers to find an
affordable policy. Everyone wants to maintain their independence, and driving
your own motor vehicle is one of the surest ways of holding onto this. The
safety of the driver and others on the road is of utmost importance, and that
is why any elderly drivers should have their eyes and reflexes tested
regularly.
